म सोलुखुम्बु, नेपालको सानो गाउँमा जन्मिएको थिएँ, जुन विश्वकै अग्लो चुचुरो सगरमाथाको घरको रूपमा प्रसिद्ध छ। मैले मेरो विद्यालय प्रमाणपत्र (एस.एल.सी.) फाप्लु सामुदायिक विद्यालयबाट पुरा गरेको थिएँ, जुन मेरो घरबाट एक घण्टाको यात्रा थियो।

इन्टरनेट वा मोबाइल फोनबिना हुर्किएर, मैले मेरो अध्ययनमा प्रारम्भिक चरणमै उत्कृष्टता प्राप्त गरेँ र सोलुखुम्बु जिल्लाबाट एस.एल.सी.मा उत्कृष्टता हासिल गरेँ। डाक्टर बन्ने मेरो सपनाले मलाई कडा मेहनत गर्न प्रेरित गर्‍यो, डाक्टरको पेसाको बारेमा सामान्य जानकारी मात्र भए पनि, स्टेथेस्कोप भएको व्यक्तिले यो पेसाको प्रतिनिधित्व गर्थ्यो।

मेरो एस.एल.सी. पुरा गरेपछि, डाक्टर बन्ने लक्ष्यसहित म आफ्नो शिक्षा अगाडि बढाउन काठमाडौँ गएँ। यस सङ्क्रमणको क्रममा, मैले १६ वर्षको उमेरमा मेरो पहिलो व्यक्तिगत फोन पाएँ। चिकित्सा शिक्षाको बारेमा सीमित ज्ञानको साथ, मैले सेन्ट जेभियर कलेज, नेपालको प्रतिष्ठित संस्थानमा मेरो ए-लेभल (+२) विज्ञान कार्यक्रममा भर्ना भएँ।

म हिमालयन ट्रस्ट नेपालबाट छात्रवृत्ति प्राप्त गर्न भाग्यशाली भएँ, जसले मलाई सेन्ट जेभियरमा दुई वर्षे ए-लेभल कार्यक्रम गर्न सक्षम बनायो। काठमाडौँमा, म एक छात्रावासमा बसेँ, जहाँ मैले चार साथीहरूसँग कोठा साझा गरेँ।

ठाउँ सानो थियो, तर मेरो सपना ठुलो थियो। छात्रावासको खाना राम्रो थिएन, तर मैले साथीहरूको साथलाई मन पराएँ, जो मध्ये अधिकांश मध्यम वर्गीय पृष्ठभूमिका थिए। त्यहाँ सबैको एक आकाङ्क्षा थियो। मेरो साथीहरूको आँखामा देखिने दृढताले मलाई तनावपूर्ण समयमा प्रेरित गरायो।

सेन्ट जेभियरको मेरो प्रारम्भिक हप्ताहरू प्रविधि दक्षताको अभाव र अपरिचित वातावरणका कारण चुनौतीपूर्ण थिए। तथापि, मैले शिक्षा परिवर्तन गर्ने शक्तिलाई चिनेकोले दृढ रहेँ। सेन्ट जेभियरमा मैले अनुभव गरेको बौद्धिक विकास गहिरो थियो।

मेरो दोस्रो वर्षमा विश्वविद्यालय आवेदन, मानकीकृत परीक्षण, र विदेश अध्ययनको बारेमा भएका छलफलहरूले मेरो आकाङ्क्षालाई अझै बलियो बनायो। मैले अन्तर्राष्ट्रिय आवेदन आवश्यकताहरूको अनुसन्धान गरेँ, एसएटी र टीओईएफएल परीक्षाहरू दिएँ, र संयुक्त राज्य अमेरिकाका विश्वविद्यालयहरूमा आवेदन दिएँ।

मैले धेरै विश्वविद्यालयहरूको प्रस्तावहरू प्राप्त गरेँ र मलाई छात्रवृत्ति प्रस्ताव गर्ने बर्मिङ्घमको अलाबामा विश्वविद्यालय (UAB) रोजें।

सन् २०१७ मा, म संयुक्त राज्य अमेरिका आइपुगेँ र UAB मा सामेल भएँ। नयाँ देशमा १८ वर्षको उमेरमा जीवन समायोजन गर्ने चुनौतीपूर्ण थियो, विशेष गरी काम र अध्ययन सन्तुलन राख्न। घरको याद र कठिनाइहरूका बाबजुद, मैले डाक्टर बन्ने मेरो लक्ष्यमा ध्यान केन्द्रित गरेँ, मेरो परिवारको समर्थन र सामाजिक अपेक्षाहरूले मलाई प्रेरित गरायो।

मेरो स्नातक अध्ययनका क्रममा, मैले एपिजेनेटिक्स, रोग विज्ञान, र नेफ्रोलोजीमा अनुसन्धान गरेँ। मैले ग्रामीण नेपाली विद्यार्थीहरूलाई सहयोग गर्न 'दी ब्राइट फ्युचर अर्गनाइजेसन' पनि स्थापना गरेँ, जसले कम्प्युटर साक्षरता र स्वास्थ्य सेवा र शैक्षिक सहयोगलाई जोड दियो। २०१९ मा, मैले विश्वविद्यालयको लागि अनुसन्धान राजदूतको रूपमा सेवा गरेँ, जहाँ मैले प्रशासनिक सीप सिकेँ, सम्बन्धहरू निर्माण गरेँ, र टोलीको नेतृत्व गर्ने अवसर पाएँ।

मेरो चार वर्षको स्नातक अध्ययन अवधिमा, मैले सात स्थानीय र राष्ट्रिय सम्मेलनहरूमा भाग लिएँ, चार प्रमुख परियोजनाहरू पूरा गरेँ, र उत्कृष्ट शैक्षिक रेकर्ड कायम राखेँ। मेरो स्नातक डिग्रीको अन्त्यसम्म, मैले प्रतिष्ठित विश्वविद्यालयहरूमा आवेदन दिनको लागि आत्मविश्वास प्राप्त गरेँ, अन्ततः इम्यूनोलोजी अनुसन्धानमा केन्द्रित हावर्ड विश्वविद्यालयमा स्थान प्राप्त गर्दैछु ।  

हावर्डमा, मैले भाइरसहरू र तिनीहरूको प्रभावहरूको अध्ययनमा संलग्न भएँ, जसले मलाई सेलुलर र आणविक जीवविज्ञानमा गहिरो रुचि विकास गर्न प्रेरित गर्‍यो, जसले मलाई म्यासाचुसेट्स इन्स्टिच्युट अफ टेक्नोलोजी (MIT) मा थप अध्ययन गर्न प्रेरित गर्‍यो।

MIT मा, म भ्रूणको मोर्फोजेनेसिस र सेलुलर विभाजन नियमनमा केन्द्रित स्वतन्त्र अनुसन्धान गर्दछु। विगत दुई वर्षमा, मैले दुई राष्ट्रिय, एक अन्तर्राष्ट्रिय, र चार स्थानीय सम्मेलनहरूमा सक्रिय रूपमा भाग लिएको छु। साथै, म संयुक्त अधिराज्यमा पार्किन्सन रोगको लागि औषधि विकासमा केन्द्रित अनुसन्धान परियोजनामा संलग्न छु।

मेरो आकाङ्क्षाहरू केवल डाक्टर बन्ने भन्दा पर पुगेका छन्। म अब MD + PhD प्राप्त गर्ने मार्गमा छु, जसले अस्पतालमा बिरामीहरूको हेरचाहलाई प्रयोगशालामा जैव चिकित्सा अनुसन्धानसँग एकीकृत गर्दछ। सोलुखुम्बुको सानो गाउँको विद्यालयदेखि सेन्ट जेभियर, UAB, हावर्ड, र MIT जस्ता शीर्ष संस्थानहरूमा मेरो यात्रा निरन्तरता, लचिलोपन, र भविष्यको लागि स्पष्ट दृष्टिकोणका गुणहरूमा माझिएको छ।

I was born in the small village of Solukhumbu, Nepal, renowned for being the home of Mount Everest, the world’s highest peak. I completed my School Leaving Certificate (S.L.C.) at Phaplu Community School, a one-hour journey from my home. Growing up without internet or mobile phones, I excelled in my studies early on and achieved Distinction in S.L.C. from Solukhumbu district. My dream of becoming a medical doctor pushed me to work hard, despite having only a basic understanding of the profession, symbolized by the person with a stethoscope.

After finishing my S.L.C., I moved to Kathmandu to further my education with the goal of becoming a doctor. During this transition, I got my first personal phone at the age of 16. With limited knowledge about medical education, I enrolled in the Science program for my A-Level (+2) at St. Xavier’s College, one of Nepal’s prestigious institutions. I was fortunate to receive a scholarship from the Himalayan Trust Nepal, enabling me to pursue my two-year A-Level program at St. Xavier’s. In Kathmandu, I stayed in a hostel, sharing a room with four friends. The space was small, but my dreams were big. The hostel food was not great, but I cherished the company of friends, most of whom were from middle-class backgrounds. Everyone had an aspiration there. The determination in my friends eyes kept me motivated during stressful times.

My initial weeks at St. Xavier’s were challenging due to my lack of technological proficiency and the unfamiliar environment. However, I persevered, recognizing the transformative power of education. The intellectual growth I experienced at St. Xavier’s was profound. Discussions about university applications, standardized tests, and studying abroad during my second year fueled my aspirations further. I researched international application requirements, took the SAT and TOEFL exams, and applied to universities in the USA.

I received multiple university offers and chose the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), which offered me a scholarship. In 2017, I arrived in the USA and joined UAB. Adjusting to life in a new country at the age of 18 was challenging, especially balancing work and studies. Despite homesickness and difficulties, I stayed focused on my goal of becoming a doctor, motivated by my family’s support and societal expectations.

During my bachelor's studies, I engaged in research on epigenetics, pathology, and nephrology. I also founded The Bright Future Organization to support rural Nepalese students, emphasizing computer literacy and providing healthcare and educational assistance. In 2019, I served as the Research Ambassador for the university, where I learned administrative skills, built connections, and had the opportunity to lead a team.

During my four years of undergraduate study, I participated in seven local and national conferences, completed four major projects, and maintained an excellent academic record. By the end of my bachelor's degree, I had gained the confidence to apply to prestigious universities, ultimately securing a position at Harvard University focusing on Immunology research. At Harvard, I delved into the study of viruses and their effects, developing a keen interest in cellular and molecular biology, which led me to pursue further studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

At MIT, I am conducting independent research on developmental biology, focusing on embryonic morphogenesis and cellular division regulation. Over the past two years, I have actively participated in two national, one international, and four local conferences. Additionally, I am involved in a research project in the United Kingdom focusing on developing medicine for Parkinson’s Disease.

My aspirations have evolved beyond just becoming a medical doctor. I am now on the path to obtaining an MD + PhD, integrating patient care in the hospital with biomedical research in the laboratory. My journey from a small village school in Solukhumbu to top institutions like St. Xavier’s, UAB, Harvard, and MIT has instilled in me the virtues of persistence, resilience, and a clear vision for the future.
